History

Alameda County was created on March 25 1853 from

county lands of Contra Costa and Santa Clara. The

chief town chosen at the time was Alvarado; it was later

moved to San Leandro in 1856. But the city, devastated

by the earthquake of 1868, led to the choice of another locality, Brooklyn, to act as the chief town; it was later incorporated into Oakland, which has been the chief town since 1873.
